POHLMAN
Pohlman is my brother, and a good friend. He's my main cinematic compatriot. How did I give him the moniker "Pohlman", you ask? Well, he's tall like 6'4". One day he was bragging how tall he was on the b-ball court. I told him "Yeah, right. Like Scott Pohlman". Now, Scott Pohlman was this repugnant little point guard that played for Auburn a few years ago, and he was like, 6'1". We laughed, and so the name Pohlman stuck as an inside joke.
As far as being a movie geek, well, he is one. He's too cool to ever admit it, but he is. He CONSTANTLY quotes movies, especially comedies. He has a massive collection of movies on VHS (many cribbed form me) and a burgeoning DVD collection. We grew up together at the Crosscreek Cinemas, spending damn near every Saturday there in our youth. Grandma would drop us off and we'd take in a matinee. As we have gotten older we still take in quite a few flicks together. One of the great memories I have regarding Pohlman and the movies happened in 1999. Me, Ru-Bear, and Pohlman camped out over night on the sidewalk in Greenville to get tickets to "Star Wars: Ep.1" for opening night. Now, Pohlman wasn't a big Star Wars fan, nor was Ru-Bear, but they agreed to go with me. That night, they became Star Wars fans. As the night wore on HUNDREDS of fans lined up completely around the theater. We brought a football to toss, and some playing cards, and our sleeping bags and just sat out there all night tossing the ball, playing cards and chatting with other fans about Star Wars. The next day we got our tickets, and then opening night came around. I will always remeber being at the Regal Hollywood 20 the night my brother, Pohlman, saw a Star Wars on the big screen for the first time. Me, Pohlman, Ru-Bear, and Diamond One.
There are so many more memories Pohlman and I have at the movies. The Beverly Hills Ninja incident, Tree at Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Fossett at AP2, Annie sitting in that guys lap at Ernest Goes To Camp, "Where the n----s at?" at Ernest Rides Again, Iceman in the Ghostface mask opening night at Scream 2 (one of my fave's), the Jumanji riots that night at the Village, "That boys face is in the water!", Lactose (nuff said), and on and on.
Pohlman is integral to this site and my life, movie-going and otherwise. That and he used to be called Quantas-Flantas.

MY LADY FRIEND
Ah, yes, My Lady Friend. She is the love of my life. Partly because she's smart and beautiful, partly because she put's up with me. When I was in the 9th grade, my church youth group went on a rafting trip. My Lady Friend went and she was in 10th grade. The night before we were staying in the student union at Clemson, when on of the counselors asked if anyone wanted to go down the street to the movies. "Above The Rim" was playing. I, of course went, and so did this other girl (at that time she wasn't My Lady Friend, I hardly knew her) So on the way we have to listen to this guy tell this insane story about how Clemson students were demanding their "penny back" at the theater. It was (still is) a 99 cent theater, and they hadn't been giving people their penny back (says a lot about Clemson). The theater is a grand one, the Astro Triple, to this day one of my favorite theaters. Well, we get to the theater and there's a line around the block; "Above the Rim" is sold out. Soooo, instead we go see Luke Perry in "8 Seconds". Ugh. But, to this day I consider it our first date. The first "official" date we went on was to see "A Time To Kill". Another movie moment we had was during "Titanic". About 2 hours and 45 minutes in to this one the reel breaks. Well, while they're fixing it all the women are boo-hooing about the movie. Well I cracked a joke about the real breaking and she flies off the handle and doesn't speak to me all the way home. One of the few times a film has stirred true passion in her, and something we joke about still today. Since then we have stayed together, she's graduated college and gotten a job and a house near me. We will be engaged soon. And we go to the movies together all the time. I have even gotten her fired up for "Spider-Man". And if anyone knows My Lady Friend, they know THAT'S no small feat. |

MR. & MRS. DIAMOND ONE
These are my parents. Good folks, and are very dear to me and to the site. I basically hold my dad responsible for my 2 obsessions: Movies and University of South Carolina sports. When I was little he used to carry me to USC games and watch them on tv with me. He instilled in me a very real despise for Clemson University athletics, and a love for the Gamecocks approached only by my brother, Pohlman. And then there were movies. My dad used to take me to all the movies back in the day. I'll always remember seeing "ET" at the Apollo and crying my eyes out. We went to see "Return of the Jedi" in Greenville when I was 5, and the power went out in the middle of the show. It didn't dampen my love for the film any less. He used to get me out of school to go see movies. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was one. Still my favorite of that series. "The Last Starfighter" was another. What a great sci-fi movie that was. I'll be forever grateful for him taking me to see movies that some will say a chap like me was too young to see at the time. Like "Aliens". But guess what? I'll always remember seeing "Aliens" on the big screen. We saw all the Indy films together, we saw all the Star Wars films together, and I vow that as long as a movie has the green and gold "Lucasfilm" logo out front, my father and I will see it together the first time. Mrs. Diamond One is a great dame as well. My mother, whether she realizes it or not, has contributed much to this site, simply by going along with dad when was raising me to be a movie hound. By tagging along when we went to see "Spaceballs" and "Howard the Duck". By smiling and saying "That's great!" when I ran in the kitchen at 5 years old after seeing the "Return of the Jedi" commercial for the first time and exclaimed to her, "MOM! Princess Leia got new clothes!!" By letting my walls be covered with posters so that you couldn't even see "wall" anymore. By just rolling her eyes when Pohlman gave me "The Nightmare on Elm Street" collection on DVD for Christmas. By being a great and supportive mom. And don't let her fool you. She has mad insight on films. The lengthy discusssion we had after "ALI" proves it so. That and she sided with me in an argument with dad over Denzel Washington's "John Q". |
